Understanding West Nile Virus in Germany
Overview of West Nile Virus (WNV)
West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne viral infection that can affect humans and animals. It is spread primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito.
WNV is found in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. In Germany, the first human cases of WNV were reported in 2020.
Symptoms and Transmission of WNV
Symptoms of WNV
Most people (80%) infected with WNV do not experience any symptoms.
Those who do exhibit symptoms may develop:
- Fever
- Headache
- Body aches
- Nausea and vomiting
- Rash
Transmission of WNV
WNV is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected by feeding on infected birds, which are the main reservoir of the virus.
The virus is not transmitted from person to person through contact with an infected individual.
Prevention and Treatment of WNV
Preventing WNV
- Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus when outdoors.
- Wear long sleeves and pants when in areas with mosquitoes.
- Eliminate standing water around your home, which can serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
- Install screens on windows and doors to prevent mosquitoes from entering.
Treatment for WNV
There is no specific treatment for WNV infection. Treatment is supportive and focuses on relieving symptoms.
